BONUS COCOA - Nutrient cocktail in coastal zones of the Baltic Sea / Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, Warnemünde
Within the BONUS-COCOA project we studied the biogeochmesistry of the Bay of Gdansk where the Vistula drains into the Baltic Sea. We studied the plume of the Vistula river in great detail because it is one of the major single nutrient sources in the southern Baltic Sea. We measured physical variables of the water, collected water and sediments for nutrient and dissolved organic matter analysis and performed rate measurements of some major nitrogen turnover processes. Samples from 13 stations were collected while one of them (VE02) close to the mouth was also a time series stations.
Since we encountered a storm during the cruise Alkor had to seek shelter in the harbor of Gdansk for 2 days. When we returned to the working area the swell still prevented sampling so that only a few samples were collected after the storm again at the station close to the coast. However, the storm also provided interesting insight into consequences of strong winds on the nutrient chemistry and sediments since nutrient concentrations where much lower in the pore waters and it seemed that resuspension had led to injection of nutrients into the water.
Overall the cruise was a great success and sediment biology and nutrient chemistry will allow insight into the coupling between water and sediment.
