Summary of project objectives: An optical mooring was installed in late 2003 at the "DyFAMed" station in the framework of the BOUSSOLE (buoy for acquisition of long-term optical series), in order to acquire a long-term series of the optical properties of the site. Acquiring such a high-frequency data base makes it possible to monitor the stability of satellite observations, and thus keep good calibration as for the European MERIS sensor (launched in 2002 and stopped in 2012), and to perform "indirect calibration" to bring it to the required level of accuracy. The data are similarly used to validate other missions (SeaWiFS, MODIS, POLDER, VIIRS). This type of data set also makes it possible to study the causes of variability in relationships between optical properties and the chlorophyll concentration, which ultimately also means better interpretation of "ocean colour" satellite observations. A number of basic research studies are also underway in marine optics and bio-optics.
Cruise objectives: These were monthly survey cruises on the mooring site with a dual objective of (1) verifying the buoy's good operability and the good condition of the mooring and (2) carrying out a series of additional measurements that are needed either to interpret the continuous measurements taken on the mooring or to acquire additional parameters for marine optics studies. The supplementary measurements include: CTD profiles, HPLC pigments, specific absorption of phytoplankton, particles and dissolved matter, dry weight, descending and ascending radiance profiles, inherent optical property profiles, atmospheric measurements (aerosols).
