MOMAR - MOMAR - FRANCE (Monitoring Mid Atlantic Ridge) / Institute of Earth Physics of Paris

EXOMAR (EXtremophiles Of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) aimed to study the biodiversity of highly differentiated hydrothermal ecosystems of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: TAG (26°N), Lost City (30°N), and the Rainbow and Lucky Strike sites of the Azores triple junction. TAG is a very deep(3,650 m) site in the Atlantic for which many geoscientific studies have been published, but whose animal and microbial communities have not yet been described. Lost City is a very recently discovered site offering a very novel geochemical context (base hydrothermal fluids at low temperatures) which is theoretically propitious for finding new microbial taxa. The Rainbow and Lucky Strike sites also have different features (intermediate depths and specific geochemical signatures). This cruise involving many microbiologists will simultaneously implement culturing and molecular approaches to study extremophile microbial ecosystems to describe diversity for scientific and biotech purposes. The study's organization and interpretation of microbiological results are based on thorough integration with mineralogical and geochemical analyses. Concurrently, the distribution of animal populations will be analyzed with respect to analytical data acquired which is characteristic of their respective environments. Microbiology studies will be conducted by French and Japanese scientists in the framework of JAMSTEC and IFREMER cooperation. In this framework, the two fields of thermophilia and barophilia of microoganism extremophilia will be studied conjointly. 2 mission days were added to deploy a long-term geophysical mooring, after the GRAVILUCK cruise report in 2006.
